The Botanical Garden of Castilla-La Mancha is now a member of the international network ‘the Climate Toolkit’.

JBCLM disclosure.

Oct 6, 2023

More than a hundred museums, botanical gardens and zoos are part of this international group promoting the efficient use of facilities to combat climate change.

The only two institutions representing Spain in this network are the Royal Botanical Garden of Madrid and the Botanical Garden of Castilla-La Mancha, in Albacete.

The Botanical Garden of Castilla-La Mancha has joined the initiative ‘The Climate Toolkit for museums, gardens and zoos’, promoted by Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI), the American Alliance of Museums and the American Public Gardens Association.

This global collaboration network comprises 32 objectives to tackle climate change through leading institutions, with the aim of inspiring society in this regard. These goals include efficient energy use, respectful management of plant collections, research and respect for people. The Botanical Garden of Castilla-La Mancha, in Albacete, meets most of the objectives proposed in this network and will therefore share a space for dialogue in The Climate Toolkit alongside other institutions, mainly from the United States, but also New Zealand, British, Canadian and French institutions, in order to promote efficient energy use, ecological waste management, soil enrichment and sustainable use, and the use of native plants in gardening.

To date, 130 institutions form part of this international network of museums, gardens and zoos, with the Royal Botanical Garden of Madrid and the Botanical Garden of Castilla-La Mancha being the only two Spanish members currently present in The Climate Toolkit.

This initiative encourages its members to motivate other people and entities to take action in the fight against climate change in all aspects, mentoring them to find new ways of respectful management.

In this way, the Botanical Garden of Castilla-La Mancha once again puts the city of Albacete in the international spotlight as an example of responsible use of resources and sustainability, as well as biodiversity conservation.
