The forests that withstand the most water stress on the Peninsula.

The Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis) is a heliophilous* species well adapted to the Mediterranean summer drought, capable of surviving in areas with less than 300 mm of annual rainfall. It is characteristic of Hellín and neighboring areas in the Sierra de Segura (Yeste, Férez, Elche de la Sierra, Aýna…), as well as other regions in the eastern half of Castilla-La Mancha. Its distribution centers on the western Mediterranean but extends to the coasts of France and Italy, northern Africa, and the Near East. In Spain, it grows along the Mediterranean coast on calcareous soils and penetrates inland into the eastern half of the peninsula.

Due to its drought resistance, it has been widely used in reforestation, promoting its spread in Spain over the past centuries. It is highly exposed to recurrent wildfires, and many populations have adapted to fire: these highly flammable trees can produce serotinous cones that remain closed for years, releasing seeds only under the high temperatures of a fire, resulting in a literal “rain of seeds” that germinate quickly with autumn rains to recolonize the area.

The recreation also includes Mediterranean species highly adapted to drought, such as prickly juniper (Juniperus oxycedrus), Clusius’ rockrose (Cistus clusii), white cistus (Cistus albidus), joint-pine (Ephedra fragilis), and Mediterranean buckthorn (Rhamnus alaternus).
