Vegetable gardens

Next to the Gardens of the World are the vegetable gardens, a space where some associations collaborating with the JBCLM cultivate seasonal vegetables.

Association of Ecological Leisure Horticulturists of Albacete. This association highlights different systems of organic production:

  • Traditional cultivation. Characterised by soil tillage, both for preparing the sowings and for incorporating organic fertilisers and removing competitive nitrophilous and weedy plants.

  • “Parades en crestall” cultivation, by Gaspar Caballero. Using rectangular plots of 1.5 m width that are never walked on, enriched with organic compost without mixing with the soil, exudation irrigation to maintain constant moisture, and crop rotation to prevent diseases, this system achieves high vegetable yields while minimising water use, sowing labour and maintenance.

  • Raised bed cultivation with various materials. This simple technique allows effective, practical and comfortable soil management. Using materials such as bricks or wood for the sides reduces water evaporation and retains the substrate.

Association of Friends of the Botanical Garden of Castilla-La Mancha. This group cultivates wild vegetables: plants traditionally harvested in rural areas for human consumption, either raw or cooked. Popular examples include bladder campion (Silene vulgaris), rocket (Eruca vesicaria), and fennel (Foeniculum vulgare), depending on the season. In addition, the Association participates in promoting the institution through activities held beyond the garden grounds.

Red Cross of Albacete. This humanitarian association cultivates a traditional organic vegetable garden through a volunteer programme and also develops educational activities in collaboration with the JBCLM.
