XXI. Melliferous Plants and Wild Fruit Trees
Melliferous Plants
Between the vegetable gardens and the outer fence of the JBCLM along the Vía Verde de la Pulgosa, there is a collection of plants adapted to bee pollination. These melliferous plants have conspicuous flowers that reflect ultraviolet light to attract bees. They are an essential food source for honeybees (Apis mellifera) and support numerous other pollinator insects. This collection includes aromatic labiates and several species of the genus Vella, among others.
Alongside, there is a collection of trees and shrubs producing wild fruits, such as service tree (Sorbus aria), walnut (Juglans regia), fig (Ficus carica), laurestine (Viburnum tinus), barberry (Berberis vulgaris), wild apple (Malus sylvestris), etc., providing an important food resource for wildlife.
