VII. Cold-Hardy Palms
Did you know that there are palm trees that can withstand fairly low temperatures?
All the palms (family Arecaceae) displayed in this collection are characterised by inhabiting arid or subhumid regions and by their ability to withstand the harsh continental Mediterranean climate of Albacete, although they require special care during the coldest winter months. Each specimen is also provided with specific substrate conditions tailored to the ecological requirements of the species. The section faces south-east, allowing optimal use of sunlight and heat for plant maintenance. In addition, the dark brown sandy substrate absorbs heat during the day and releases it slowly at night, creating a favourable microclimate for the survival of these monocotyledonous plants.
This collection includes species from the New World, such as Washingtonia filifera (California fan palm), as well as rarer species from the genera Sabal, Butia, Trithrinax and Brahea. Particularly noteworthy is Brahea edulis, an endangered species native to Guadalupe Island (Mexico). The two European palm species are also represented here: the Mediterranean fan palm (Chamaerops humilis) and the Cretan date palm (Phoenix theophrasti), endemic to a few islands in the eastern Mediterranean. Other species on display include the Canary Island date palm (Phoenix canariensis) and several Asian genera such as Nanorrhops, which can withstand winter temperatures below –15 °C, as well as Rhapis and Trachycarpus.
